Orthognathic case studies
Orthognathic surgery or jaw surgery is an orthodontic treatment which corrects the jaw bones and realigns the jaws to improve the function. This treatment also provides an improvement in the facial appearance of the patient which can improve their quality of life. Orthognathic surgery may also be carried out in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to realign the teeth as well. This is usually carried out within a hospital setting.
How do irregularities of the jaw develop? This can happen either as jaw growth disturbance during development such as a fracture of the jaw bone during childhood or children with specific conditions such as cleft lip, and palate or a syndrome.
These jaw irregularities can be noticed as children and it becomes much more noticeable during the puberty stage. Here at Oldham Orthodontics we often find patient’s requiring this treatment during late puberty in the teenage years. This is the best time to perform jaw surgery because you are not running the risk of repeating jaw irregularities as growth can change the jaw shape during the remaining growth cycle of the teenage years. Usually the growth stops for males around 17 years - 21 years old and 14 years -16 years old for females. Adults can also undergo jaw surgery treatment to fix their jaw function problems and realign the jaw.
Here at Oldham Orthodontics our patient satisfaction for orthognathic surgery with orthodontic treatment combined is incredibly high due to the improvement of oral functionality plus facial and dental appearance.
