Orthodontic treatment is the process of straightening teeth to not only achieve a more pleasing smile but better alignment to help with cleaning and chewing. Metal braces are some of the most affordable and effective forms of braces, and we offer them here at Oldham Orthodontics!
Initially, in the first few days of getting metal braces, you may feel some discomfort and find it a bit difficult to alter your eating habits. Your diet may have to change slightly after braces simply because eating the wrong foods could result in damaging your brackets or wires.
We’re going to give you a run down of foods you should avoid and foods that are ok.
Food that is best for braces includes soft and mushy foods that won’t damage or break your braces. These can include things like:
- Milkshakes and smoothies
- Scrambled eggs
- Cake
- Stew (no chewy meat)
- Porridge
- Curry
- Cheese
- Soft bread
Food to avoid would be things that are either hard, brittle or chewy. A few you really ought to skip include:
- Popcorn
- Nuts
- Hard or sticky sweets
- Chewing Gum
- Crisps or hard crackers
- Hard bread or pizza crust
- Ice
- Crunchy raw vegetables and fruits like apples and carrots
Now your diet will only change if you get metal or fixed braces as these are attached to your teeth and will come loose if damaged from foods.
So what are the alternatives to metal or fixed braces?
Invisalign is considered the best alternative to fixed braces, especially for adults. Invisalign involves wearing clear plastic aligner trays which are removable, meaning you can eat whatever you want while they’re off!
